What is ISLO?
The Sports Institute of Eastern Finland (ISLO) is a sports training center owned by the City of Joensuu, which offers vocational and liberal arts education and supports sports and physical education in the region in cooperation with local actors.
The heart of the Mehtimäki sports campus in Joensuu
We operate in the Joensuu city centre, part of the unique sports and physical activity environment of Mehtimäki. Our location makes us exceptional considering the entire sports institute network. In addition to Mehtimäki’s diverse sports and physical activity venues, we are surrounded by pure nature for outdoor activities and fitness, a body of water, a lively city centre, a university campus and the Business Joensuu business centre within a few kilometres.
And most importantly, sports and physical activity do not have to be transported to us, as they are a natural part of our daily lives thanks to the Joensuu Sports Academy, the area’s sports clubs and countless fitness enthusiasts. We are in the middle of everything and our goal is to become even more strongly profiled as the functional heart of Mehtimäki.
Expertise that changes activity
We are an expert organization by nature. Around 25 physical activity and well-being professionals regularly work under the ISLO logo, who are united by the desire to do things well, to help and serve, and to work together to promote people’s well-being and develop the sports industry. We train around 100 new torchbearers each year to spread the good news of physical activity and well-being.
A significant part of our operations is financed by government grants for education. The Finnish National Board of Education and the Ministry of Education and Culture grant performance-based and annually applied funding for the organization of vocational education and the educational mission of liberal arts. ISLO’s other financing consists of its own service business and project funding.
