Dance and Somatics Summer Course June 8th - 10th 2020

With Elina Ikonen

(due to COVID-19 in zoom)

Our experience of our own bodies plays an important role in how we feel about ourselves, and this influences how we interact with our environment, social and physical. At ISLO our view of dance is wide, in our classes there are no steps to learn, but instead dance and movement create the frame for somatic exploration and creative practice. In this three-day course, we introduce some methods of the one-year ISLO Education in Dance and Somatics.

Somatics refers to a general approach to working with the body where it is experienced from within rather than objectified from the outside. The implication is that when the body is experienced from within, then the body and mind are not separated but experienced as a whole.

There will be classes in improvisation, movement exploration, and other somatic movement practices such as Trager Mentastics® approach. We aim to create a relaxed atmosphere in which everyone can learn at their own pace.

This course is open for everyone and could be a great way to begin your summer. Since it happens just before the audition, it can also serve as an introduction for prospective students of the one-year course.

Place: Kaltimontie 5, (CatPeople dance studio) where our dance space locates. Notice it is not in ISLO main building.

Teacher: Elina Ikonen, head teacher / ISLO Education in Dance and Somatics

Classes: 9-15:30 or with 1h lunch break

Cost: 130 euros, includes teaching. Paying with cash or card at ISLO office (Länsikatu 15, notice it is another location, not close to the dance studio) or by invoice, you can order invoice from: toimisto@islo.fi

Practices of empathy: dance and performance
March 30th - April 2nd 2020

With Maija Hirvanen

Choreographer and performance maker Maija Hirvanen's workshop introduces the participants to some of her artistic and movement based practices. In this course, Hirvanen shares a particular aspect related to her recent work: her research into the relation of empathy and bodily based art. Workshop formats from warm ups and exercises to performance structures and dance scores are set into a playful motion. Notions of looking, presence, enjoyment, challenge, form and process will be turned around.

Hirvanen will work with the participants through movement exploration, physical methods, body system based performance acts, breathing and techniques of perception. In Hirvanen's course, empathy is looked upon in it's many sided potential. We'll work with techniques for empathic ways of creating movement as well as skills for facing differences and friction.

Come as you are!

"As a teacher, I share my inquiry of what it is to be a thinking, feeling, moving subject in this world. I do that through setting up a dialogue with ourselves and our environment in which we are empowered to be our own experts. I specialise in teaching the application of somatic approaches to contemporary dance practices. I’m also interested in how this work can be applied wider society.

I am certified to teach the Feldenkrais Method® and the Body And Earth work developed by Andrea Olsen and Caryn McHose. I studied for two years at SNDO Amsterdam and have an MA in Dance Pedagogy. I've also made extensive studies of Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement, Movement Shiatsu, Body Mind Centering and experiential anatomy."
